Imprisonment on Ysmault
The Five Inversions

The Five Inversions operated as a terrorist organization, waging a private war against the Guardians. The Inversions utilized many weapons and were well versed in various forms of black magic, necromancy, and precognition. They became masters of deception and used the power of suggestion to sow fear and doubt in their enemies. At some point, the Inversions allied themselves with a group called "The Empire of Tears". While with the Empire, the Inversions faced off in what was to be their final battle with the Guardians.
The Massacre of Space sector 666
The Red Lantern Corps were formed from the remnants of the Empire of Tears. Atrocitus of the Five Inversions, one of the five survivors of the massacre of Sector 666 was the first to become a red lantern and also forged the Red Central Power Battery which stands before a great lake of blood on the prison planet of Ysmault. Using the blood magic’s of the Five Inversions, Atrocitus harnessed the red spectrum of light, allowing him to empower the rage within him. The Red Power Ring was born out of anger and crystallized the blood of the Inversions.

A Rough Guide To...
"With blood and rage of crimson red, Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, Together with our hellish hate, We'll burn you all... That is your fate!"
Atrocitus
The Massacre Of Sector 666

Before the Guardians of the Universe formed the Green Lantern Corps they employed a robotic army known as the Manhunters to police the 3600 sectors of space. Although a capable fighting force, the Manhunters were limited by their lack of emotion, most notably, compassion and empathy. This flaw would prove fatal when, for a still undisclosed reason, the Manhunters malfunctioned. This twisted programming would result in the Massacre of Space Sector 666; the worst mistake made by the Guardians since Krona first attempted his forbidden experiments. Reasoning that the best way to protect life from harm was to eliminate it, the Manhunters murdered billions of inhabitants of Sector 666 before they were stopped by their former masters. In the end, only five beings remained. These five including Qull and Atrocitus, christened themselves "The Five Inversions" and pledged revenge against the Guardians for the genocide perpetrated against Sector 666.
The Five Inversions
Imprisonment on Ysmault

The Guardians sought to eliminate or control all of the stray magic that permeated throughout the universe, the magics that gave groups like the Inversions the power they needed to spread chaos. After a gigantic battle, the Guardians defeated the Empire of Tears and chained the Five Inversions to the planet Ysmault, where they were sentenced to spend an eternity crucified for their crimes. The Guardians then ordered Ysmault to be made off limits to all travellers.
The Prophecy

For centuries, the Inversions languished on Ysmault, until one day the Green Lantern Abin Sur arrived on the planet, in pursuit of a damaged star ship. The Inversion known as Qull toyed with Abin Sur, offering him the answer to any three questions he asked. Abin Sur used the first two questions to locate the damaged ship and save its lone survivor, but was tempted into asking a personal question about his fate and the fate of the Corps. Qull then recounted the prophecy of "The Blackest Night", a tale of the death of the universe when a force known as "The Black" will "one day consume all light and all life."

The Red Lantern Corps is Born

The Guardians of the Universe did not take Qull's manipulation of Abin Sur lightly. At one point, the Inversions were lead to believe that they would be transferred off of Ysmault to a more traditional prison planet. Now thanks to Qull's perverted games, the Guardians abandoned this idea and left the Inversions to continue to rot for all eternity on Ysmault.
Atrocitus was furious with Qull's carelessness. For years, he had been experimenting with magicks in an attempt to harness the red spectrum of light, and had finally unlocked its secret; blood. Atrocitus took his firsts steps towards forming the Red Lantern Corps by caving in Qull’s head with his red lantern, anointing the lantern in the demon's blood. Atrocitus would go on to bleed all of the Inversions. There on Ysmault, within a lake of blood, Atrocitus formed a Central Red Lantern that drew on the rage of the universe. The Red Lantern Corps was born.
The Prophecy
Blood Magic

Atrocitus's association with the Empire of Tears has granted him a great deal of shamanistic magic, ‘Blood Magic’. The rituals involve murder and the use of the corpse’s own flesh and blood to complete the ritual's. Atrocitus has used these rituals to predict future events and to forge the Red Lantern power rings.
Ysmault

Located somewhere in Space Sector 2814, the planet Ysmault was once the throne world of the foul Empire of Tears, a galactic empire ruled by demons. The Empire was battled by the ancient Maltusians, precursors of the Guardians of the Universe, in their efforts to contain the wild magic of the universe. After the Empire's defeat, planet was turned into a prison and access to the planet was restricted by the Guardians.
Atrocitus has recently transformed the planet after freeing himself from his crucifix and murdering the five Inversions. Using blood magic’s, he forged a Central Power Battery of his own amidst a great lake of blood. The Red Lantern Central Power Battery, contains the red light of rage of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum.
Red Lantern power ring

A Red Lantern Ring is similar in form and function to that of a Green Lantern Ring. However, whereas a Green Lantern Ring is powered by willpower, a Red Lantern Ring is fuelled by rage.
Members upon taking on the ring undergo a form of indoctrination. Making its members give into the rage and hatred in their hearts until its all that they know. An all consuming need for revenge and destruction. In turn taking over their minds.
The Red ring replaces the heart of its bearer, rendering it useless. The blood spoils, and the ring expels it from the bearer's mouth in a vomit of violent rage. A Red Lantern's veins stretch as they fill with the liquid fire of the red light.
The Red Lantern can vomit plasma, which has been described as napalm and acid mixed together, it burns away anything. These flames burn even in space. The effect it has on living beings allows it to ignite the flames of rage in a victims' blood and has the effect of burning through an energy aura of an opponent as well as corrupting other power rings depleting them at an accelerated rate and greatly weakening the structures they create.
The power ring is also capable of creating force fields, life support and allowing flight. It can generate constructs similar to Green Lantern power rings, however due to a bearer being possessed by the red light of rage, the wearer usually acts on pure instinct, driven to kill and destroy with no reason or forethought and is therefore unlikely to use this function.
