Origins:

The being known, as War is in fact the Shi’Ar alien Deathbird. Deathbird was the first born to the ruling family of the alien Shi-ar, a race of mammal-like humanoids descended from bird-like creatures. Unlike her younger siblings, Deathbird possessed atavistic characteristics, notably functional wings growing under her arms.
For her part in her father's death in order to secure her birthright as heir to the throne, Deathbird was exiled into space, the honour passed on to her younger brother D'Ken. Over the years Deathbird has sought to usurp the Shi’Ar thrown and has succeeded on one occasion. It was during one of her schemes to claim the Shi’Ar thrown that Deathbird became War. At the time she was attempting to manipulate the X-Man Bishop into helping her when they encountered the inert human form of the Living Monolith, who was floating in space. Deathbird, having already encountered Skrulls loyal to the Earth mutant Apocalypse, betrayed Bishop, delivering him to Apocalypse for purposes of her own. Instead, Deathbird was herself betrayed and transformed by Apocalypse into his horseman War.
