Origins:

Necrom was the sorcerer supreme of an extra-dimensional race, whose students were Merlyn and Feron. Necrom shared with his students the energy created by the interface of parallel dimensions, the doorways between worlds. Together, the three magicians harnessed this energy into matrix of awesome power, by using a tower on the ancient Prime Earth as a lynchpin threading the multi-verse together.
Necrom had an ulterior plan unknown to his students: to compress the alternate earths into a singularity and harness the resultant eruption of energy and giving himself the power of a god. Necrom's students tried to stop him, and Feron used his power while housing the celestial elemental force known as the Phoenix Force. Necrom instead stole a portion of the Phoenix for himself and killed Feron, and the entity known as the Phoenix fled back into space. Necrom created the "Anti-Phoenix" by incubating this portion of the Phoenix with a portion of his own life essence for future use. His plans ruined for now, Necrom fled into the multi-verse.
Necrom's activities since then remain unrevealed, although before his final gambit, Necrom had established himself as a powerful tyrant on an alternate earth. During this time, he became the arch-nemesis of the hero Kylun, who ultimately chased Necrom back to the Prime Earth.
Necrom rebuilt his strength and reabsorbed the Anti-Phoenix he left behind, and attempted to steal the entire power of the Phoenix from its current host, the time-lost mutant known as Rachel Summers. His actions led him to fight the hero team Excalibur.
