Origins:
Nathaniel Essex was a human doctor living in Victorian England. A scientist of unparalleled genius, Essex pioneered the field of genetics and foresaw the coming of mutations that would befall mankind. However, his unorthodox experiments caused him to be rejected by the Royal Society, and by his own wife, who blamed him for the condition of his son, who is assumed to be a mutant. At the same time, the ancient villain Apocalypse revived after a period of recuperation and learned of Essex's theories. In search of allies, Apocalypse captured and subjected Sinister to experiments, genetically augmenting him into his servant. However, Sinister rebelled, and Apocalypse was defeated by interference from the mutant heroes Cyclops and Phoenix, who found themselves transported to the past.
Over the centuries, Essex, soon calling himself Mr. Sinister, plotted the course of certain genetic information and built an advanced base beneath an orphanage under his influence in Omaha, Nebraska, called the State Home for Foundlings.
